From the desk of Bishop Robert Barron

Friends,

The classical moral tradition has identified four cardinal or “hinge” virtues: courage, temperance, justice, and prudence.

The newest issue of Evangelization & Culture includes four feature essays on each of the four cardinal virtues and a special feature on how the cardinal virtues can guide the young and help answer their deepest questions.

It also, in the other articles, looks at these habits of the soul from a variety of angles: education, the priesthood, art, and more.

I’ve argued that, where the lives of the saints are concerned, we can see the elevation of the four cardinal virtues with particular clarity in four women: Edith Stein or St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (courage), Thérèse of Lisieux (prudence), Katharine Drexel (justice), and Teresa of Kolkata (temperance).

As you read these pages, I invite you to reflect on which other saints exemplify these four virtues and on how you, too, might exemplify them in your own life. Is there a cardinal virtue God has given to you in a concentrated way? Discern how you might, in turn, give it back to him, allowing it to be metamorphosed by his grace and used for his purposes.
