Dear Friend,
Happy Mother’s Day! On this day, we take a moment to pause and thank God for the gift of our mothers or mother figures—those women who, in their love and sacrifice, give us our first glimpse of God’s own tender care. “I have calmed and quieted my soul,” the psalmist sings, “like a weaned child with its mother.” |

While we celebrate our earthly mothers today, I invite you to remember, too, the mother of the Church, the Blessed Virgin Mary. At the foot of the cross, Jesus entrusted all of us to her care when he said to St. John, “Behold, your mother.” Mary is the perfect model of motherhood—always patient, always attentive, and always leading us closer to Christ. No matter our circumstances, we have a mother in heaven who never tires of hearing our pleas.
In fact, I’d like to offer a specific challenge to you today. I encourage all of you to pray the Memorare for your mother, grandmother, or any woman who has served as a mother in your life. It is one of the most beautiful prayers in our tradition, beginning with those wonderfully confident words: “Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection . . . was left unaided.” If you don’t know the Memorare by heart, take five minutes today to find it and learn it. It is a powerful prayer to have memorized and to carry with you.
In Christ, |
