The Back Revival
The Back Revival
This is the story of how one composer—and one of his greatest masterpieces—was rescued from obscurity and became a pillar of the classical tradition. That composer? Johann Sebastian Bach.

Though it's hard for us to imagine today, that at Bach's death in 1750 there was little indication that his music would achieve lasting fame. Buried in an unmarked grave and soon forgotten by the public's changing musical tastes, Bach and his intricate compositions were left behind as the Classical era embraced simpler styles.

Then in 1829, Felix Mendelssohn performed the long-neglected "St. Matthew Passion." Bach was rediscovered. The ensuing "Bach Revival" transformed public opinion in his favor. Scholars, performers, and publishers across Europe worked tirelessly to recover, perform, and preserve Bach’s music, elevating him from an overlooked church musician to a towering figure of Western canon.

The famous "Prelude of the First Suite" is one example of his work, where flowing arpeggios conceal the rich polyphonic craftsmanship that defined Bach’s genius. Another, Bach’s "Six Suites for Unaccompanied Cello," is considered among the most beloved works ever written for the instrument, yet it remains shrouded in mystery. No original manuscript survives, the existing copies often don't match, and the suites attracted little attention despite their extraordinary musical depth. Under different circumstances, they may well have been lost.

Today, Johann Sebastian Bach is regarded as one of history’s greatest composers. It's remarkable to think that these masterpieces—and their composer—might have faded into obscurity. Fortunately, thanks to generations of musicians and scholars who refused to let Bach's legacy disappear, modern audiences can continue to discover the beauty of his music, which speaks as powerfully today as it did nearly three centuries ago.

TODAY'S RECIPE
Small-Batch Blueberry Jam
Small-Batch Blueberry Jam
I make this small-batch blueberry jam all summer long when berries are at their peak. Because the recipe makes a modest amount (1 to 2 jars) and doesn’t require pectin or canning, it’s simple enough to make on a whim, and it’s ready in just 30 minutes. The flavor is bright and intensely blueberry, with just enough lemon to balance the sweetness.
