The Sistine Chapel includes a self-portrait. |

“The Last Judgement,” an addition to the Sistine Chapel that Michelangelo began working on a quarter-century later, depicts the second coming of Christ and God’s final judgment of all humanity. It’s also believed to depict Michelangelo himself, who included a self-portrait in the guise of St. Bartholomew, a martyred saint who was flayed (skinned alive). Michelangelo is portrayed as Bartholomew’s skin, which the saint holds in his left hand as he ascends to heaven. Was the artist comparing his own agony to that of a martyred saint, or did he merely include the self-portrait as a personal flourish? It’s unlikely we’ll ever know. |
