 | | | | Saint Nicholas and the Battle Against Christmas Fr. Steve Grunow
As Catholics, we remember Nicholas not just for his mighty deeds but his continued participation in the life of the Church as a member of the communion of saints. Through our participation in the Eucharist, we celebrate his life and witness while he celebrates with us from his place in heaven; together we worship the Lord who took flesh in the womb of the Virgin Mary. There is therefore a spirit of St. Nicholas that transcends the boundaries of heaven and earth, a spirit greater than Nicholas himself; for it is truly the Holy Spirit, sent by Christ, whom every saint bears into the world. | | READ ARTICLE | | | | | From Meathead to Maestro: Unfolding Human Nature with Rob Reiner Dr. Tod Worner
But then Rob Reiner transitioned to directing, where the entire show was his show. Interviewed years ago by 60 Minutes, Reiner confessed that to properly tell the story, he needed complete control. "You got to let me do everything, then I can give you something good. . . . If you don't let me do that, then I don't know how to function." And when he was in control, he created moments. | | READ ARTICLE | | | | | What Is the Best Education for Your Child? Mark Bradford
What is the best education for a child with a disability? Again, at this point, Catholic parents in most areas of the country have little choice. The growing number of Catholics who reject government schools must either compromise their values and accept what the government schools offer or consider if they have the capacity to homeschool and engage tutors and other support services as needed. | | READ ARTICLE | | | | | Where, O Death, Is Your Victory? Alejandro Terán-Somohano
This painting has intrigued people for centuries. Is it a moral work, inviting viewers to reflect on the shortness of life and the inevitability of death? A gruesome and nightmarish memento mori? Or is it a humanist satire of the religious violence plaguing sixteenth-century Netherlands? Art historians have long speculated about Bruegel's personal beliefs, whether he was a faithful Catholic, a secret Protestant, or a humanist religious sceptic, each reading his oeuvre according to their preferred theory. | | READ ARTICLE | | | | | Beauty Where You'd Least Expect It Dr. Alex Taylor
Isn't it this glorious capacity of God—accessible to us even in the existential darkness of suffering that so many of us encounter, even in much more fortunate circumstances than Frankl and his fellows—to bring light out of darkness that brings hope to the world? God has allowed us as human beings to imitate his great work of beauty through artistry of so many varieties.

While I've pursued the answer to this question as a Catholic eager to learn more about the faith and its relationship to sacred music, three things have stood out to me that I hadn't realized before: Sacred music fundamentally connects us with God, is more tangible and accessible than we realize, and supports and deepens our communities as a universal Church.

However, the war on Advent is something very different. It's a kind of liturgical shift backward, so that Christmas gets celebrated during Advent, and Advent . . . well, gets forgotten. Tree lighting ceremonies held in early November are just one example. Others abound. An easy listening station in my home city plays saccharine Christmas tunes until December 26, then quickly shifts back to Billy Joel and Michael Bublé. | | READ ARTICLE | | | | | Catholic Call To Be the Soul of the World (1 of 2) Tim Glemkowski
With American civic life in crisis through polarization, declining trust, and the erosion of local communities, many Catholic citizens feel alienated and powerless. Faith too often is either weaponized in partisan battles or relegated to the private sphere, leaving little room for a vision of civic renewal rooted in the deepest wells of our cultural heritage.

Catholics need to peacefully and humbly remember we are not on the losing team. Whatever becomes countercultural as our lives become more conformed to Christ is something each human heart is wired for. Holiness is attractive if it is authentic. Generosity of spirit should compel us outward into relationship with those around us, not afraid to engage for fear of being different.

Msgr. Wicks saw himself as a warrior shepherd, identifying and radicalizing a faithful remnant. He gave blistering sermons every week in which he detailed the sin of an individual parishioner, trying to goad the sinner into walking out. Fr. Jud became a priest because, before giving his life to Christ, he did something terrible in his former life as a boxer.

John Candy starred in over fifty movies in his career, including Home Alone, JFK, Cool Runnings, and Canadian Bacon. Yet while his star shone, John struggled with his health, smoked a pack of cigarettes a day, drowned his depression and anxiety in alcohol and drug use, and battled morbid obesity, weighing more than 350 pounds at times in his life. He passed away in 1994 at the tragic age of forty-three. His funeral was held at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Los Angeles, a reflection of his faith and the role it continued to play in his life until the end.

Like most art forms, this movie can and should be watched on many levels. In light of the coming feast of Christmas, we couldn't help but watch Wicked through the lens of the literary critic, disciple, and anthropologist René Girard, whose insights shine a bright and fascinating light on why God became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14).
