YREKA, Calif.—A convoy of sheriff’s deputies heads into a vast network of illegal marijuana grow operations in the foothills of Mount Shasta in California’s Siskiyou County.
They drive into a dusty encampment strewn with garbage and piles of empty plastic fertilizer containers, a blight on the otherwise scenic landscape.
The morning raid is nothing new for Siskiyou County Sheriff Jeremiah LaRue.
Thousands of makeshift greenhouses known as “hoop houses”—each one containing hundreds of illegally grown cannabis plants—are operating in the county at any given time, LaRue told The Epoch Times, as his deputies scoured the Mount Shasta Vista subdivision, a 20-minute drive northeast of Weed, Calif. Today, philosophy is often imagined as mental exercise only—scholars debating abstract ideas in solitude or thinkers contemplating life from their desks. But for the ancient Greeks, wisdom was never separate from physical discipline. The pursuit of a healthy body was considered essential to developing a virtuous and capable mind.
The gymnasium was at the center of this ideal. More than a place for athletic training, these ancient institutions were spaces where young Greeks developed endurance, self-control, and character. They prepared citizens for both intellectual debates and military responsibilities, creating an environment where conversations about truth, beauty, and virtue could emerge alongside wrestling matches and athletic competitions.
The connection between athletics and philosophy was deeply woven into Greek culture. The Olympic Games celebrated physical excellence while bringing rival city-states together in shared religious and civic traditions. Homer’s epics depicted heroes whose strength, courage, and wisdom were inseparable. Even Socrates, remembered today primarily as the father of philosophy, was also a soldier who frequented Athens’s gymnasia to challenge others in intellectual contests.
Later philosophers continued this tradition. Plato founded the Academy near an active wrestling school, and Aristotle established the Lyceum at a former gymnasium where he famously walked while teaching. Their schools weren't isolated from everyday life but grew from the Greek belief that education should cultivate the whole person.
This philosophy reached its clearest expression in the ideal of mens sana in corpore sano—“a healthy mind in a healthy body.” The phrase, later popularized by Roman writers, captured a Greek conviction that physical strength and intellectual excellence reinforced one another.
