| In 2020, Word on Fire launched what we refer to as "a cathedral in print": The Word on Fire Bible. With it, we aimed to elevate the standards of beauty and quality to the highest level because we believe the Word of God deserves nothing less.
And now, Word on Fire will do the same with the Liturgy of the Hours.
The Liturgy of the Hours is the highest form of prayer after the Mass and sacraments.
Why? Because it is the unified, sacred prayer of the whole Church that joins all the faithful, from all vocations, in all countries, into one single prayer to the Father—echoing the very Word of God back to its source.
Priests, deacons, and religious are required to pray the Liturgy of the Hours every day, and as Pope Paul VI noted, it's also the supreme way to pray as a family. It has recently seen a surge in popularity among the laity, in large part through the one million copies of Word on Fire's monthly Liturgy of the Hours booklets distributed since 2022.
However, the full Liturgy of the Hours books—originally released in the 1970s—have not been significantly updated in over fifty years. They have used essentially the same design, layout, and materials.
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) decided it's time for a new edition: the Liturgy of the Hours, Second Edition. The bishops have overseen a renewed translation of the psalms and prayers, with more accurate renderings to better guide readers' prayer. This initiative will also include additional content incorporating new saints, feast days, and celebrations.
These additions will be featured in Word on Fire's brand-new, four-volume, leather-bound set containing all the prayers for the full liturgical year.
Word on Fire has spent months sourcing the highest quality materials and methods to develop an edition that will stand the test of time and will, once again, elevate the standards of beauty for one of the Church's most important texts.
We have worked with trusted vendors on new binding techniques, ribbons, and typesetting and layout options to vastly improve the reading experience, which has not been updated since the original edition.
We're excited to announce that we've already begun the early stages of production with the manufacturer to secure the materials for such a massive undertaking.
We hope that this new design of the Liturgy of the Hours, Second Edition will truly honor the prayers inside its cover and will bring its readers closer to the source of beauty.
